Well it's officially summer & there is plenty to do in the high mountains, take a hike, make some late season summer turns or drop into BASECAMP Cafe for a tasty treat & cold ale.
BASECAMP Cafe at GUTHEGA will reopen for summer this Saturday 3rd December. Opening times will be 10am to 4pm every Fri, Saturday & Sunday until December 27 then daily through to February. We'll have some menu favourites from winter & there'll be some new summer additions as well!
Good news is from Munyang Power Station to Guthega the road has been freshly graded! Count how many Lyrebird's you spot on the way up, our record is 15! That was a snowy day, they love to scratch around in the bank on the uphillside of the road particularly when its wet!
Try the new Guthega to Charlotte's Pass track which is 9km one way. Being lower down in the sub alpine this lower altitude walk doesn't involve as much climbing as other Main Range Walks but still affords fantastic alpine views from sub alpine elevations. This is a great edition to the walks in the Main Range precinct passing through terrain previously rarely travelled including views into the Blue Lake & Spencers Ck drainages & their confluence's with the Snowy River. The early season blooms are coming out with the "Deep Purples" of the Alpine Hovea & strong yellows of the Buttercups.
If you havent had enough of winter there is still plenty of turns to be had with good cover still in the Club Lake & Blue Lake Glacial Cirques. From Charlotte Pass it is mostly walking with skis on pack to the Cirque's where you will find enough top to bottom snow. Current hazards to be aware of are:
Snowy River Crossing; consider not crosing if over knee deep
Point release snow on steeps
Sunburn & dehydration
